947 Discovery Ride Joburg Cycling Tips
With the 947 Discovery Ride Joburg around the corner, we’re pretty sure that all cyclists are training to reach their cycling goals this year. Whether you are a beginner or pro, we thought we would share some tips to prep you for the upcoming race.
Tip #1- Group Riding
The 947 Discovery Ride Joburg race consists of thousands of cyclists. If you are a beginner, you should join cycling groups during your training sessions. This will help you learn how to manoeuvre amongst the other cyclists to avoid possible collision with other cyclists.
Tip #2- Prepare for the Course
Familiarize yourself with the course. You can find the map on this website- http://www.947ridejoburg.co.za/route. Driving through the course prior to the race will allow you to familiarize yourself with the route and help you to prepare for the parts that are hilly and those that are flat/ downhill. As mentioned on the website, the first 10km of the course will consist of a cluster of steep hills. Be sure to train for this.
Tip #3- Check your Bike
Make sure to check your bike the day before the race. Ensure that nothing is loose on the bike and that your brakes are functioning properly. View your bike checklist below to make sure that your bike is ready for the big day.
Tip #4-Prepare your Gear for Race Day
Be prepared and organised for race day by packing all your necessities and gear the night before. Here is a checklist that you can use to ensure that you have everything that you need for race day. A checklist is available below.
Tip #5- Hydration
With the race being in the middle of summer, it is no longer advisable but rather a REQUIREMENT- KEEP WATER BOTTLES ON YOU! We urge cyclists to please stay hydrated at all times! Be sure to also keep snacks such as bananas and energy bars on hand. The 947 Discovery Ride Joburg route is quite long. Snacking consistently and staying hydrated is key to pushing through the race.
Tip #6- Eat as you would before a training ride
Make sure to eat the same kind of carbohydrate-rich meal as you usually would, the night before. Do not try any new diets the night before as this could be hazardous for race day. Also, do not forget to hydrate the evening before the 947 Discovery Ride Joburg.
Tip #7- Easy training session the day before
Warming up before the race is wise but don’t let it be an intense cycling session. Warming up your muscles for the race helps for race day but burning yourself out will not help you complete the 947 Discovery Ride Joburg.
Tip #8- Always Eat Breakfast
Eating two hours before the race is preferred. A healthy breakfast such as a bowl of oats with honey that releases energy slowly helps to conserve your energy during the start of the race. Don’t forget to hydrate!
Tip #9- Be Early
As you may know, the 947 Discovery Ride Joburg has MANY cyclists. It gets really busy and its best that you get to the starting point early. Parking lots are usually a few kilometres away from the entrance and it’s best that you give yourself enough time to familiarize yourself with where you have parked, where the starting point is, etc.
