On Tuesday, 8 August, GDA staff was involved in evaluating a prototype aid with a difference – a robotic mobility aid designed and built by Edrich Engelbrecht from Pretoria. Edrich is a grade 10 learner at Waterkloof High, and has a passion for science – therefore he’s once again entered the National Eskom Science Expo and has already gone through to the North Gauteng Science expo which will be judged on 18/19 August 2017 in Pretoria.
Edrich’s inspiration came from a friend with visual impairment – in an effort to potentially make a difference. GDA visually impaired staff and COM practitioners were present during a demonstration of K9’s abilities – and valuable input was exchanged from GDA staff. The name of Edrich’s robotic mobility aid, K9, was decided on after their visit on Tuesday afternoon.
Thanks to Edrich and his passionate parents for this lovely prototype robot with a difference – we hope that your ventures with K9 will be leading to greater heights – and we wish you every success with the Science Expo.
