Mandela Day with S A Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind

Wondering how you can still be charitable this Mandela Day with all that 2020 has thrown at us?

It is important to everyone at S A Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind that our supporters stay safe and continue to practice social distancing during these times. With that in mind, we have come up with a list of ways that you can still support and raise much needed funds for the Association from the safety and comfort of your own home.

Online shopping and cyber puppy cuddles:

In previous years we invited our followers to visit us at different malls across Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban for Mandela Day. It was a fun way to meet our dogs in training and chat to our staff and volunteers. It was also the chance to support us by buying Soft Toy Puppies, Raffle Tickets or making donations in the spirit of Mandela Day.

This year we aren’t able to meet with you in person but we still need your support. Buy one (or all) of the following from our online shop between 13 and 20 July and receive a cyber-cuddle from one of our gorgeous puppies straight to your inbox.

Car Raffle Tickets @R50.00 each – Purchase raffle tickets and stand a chance to start 2021 with a brand new Suzuki Swift GLX (draw takes place January 2021). – https://guidedog.org.za/product/car-raffle/

Runners Buffs @R150.00 each – Masks and Buffs have become the high-fashion of 2020. Purchase one of our gorgeous buffs and stand out from the crowd. –

Buff Special – Purchase 6 Buffs and receive the 7th FREE! https://guidedog.org.za/product/blue-buffs/  or https://guidedog.org.za/product/pink-buffs/

Soft Toy Puppies @ R120.00 each – In the absence of real S A Guide-Dogs puppy cuddles this Mandela Day, purchase one of our signature soft-toy puppies and get the next best thing. – https://guidedog.org.za/product/toy-puppies/

Quick Donate – Already stocked up on all the S A Guide-Dogs goodies? Click Donate on our website and make a donation of any size. – https://guidedog.org.za/donate/

Get creative and win a prize

If you have done way too much online shopping during lockdown, you can still raise funds for us in other ways. Dream up your own idea to raise money for S A Guide-Dogs (between 13 July and 20 July) and stand a chance to win awesome prizes. Some examples to get the creative juices flowing:

  • Bake some delicious treats and sell them to your friends and family – all proceeds going to S A Guide-Dogs.
  • Set a physical goal (ie. to do 67 push-ups a day for a week) and get your friends to sponsor your efforts.
  • Use your social media platforms to appeal for donations and raise awareness about the important work that S A Guide-Dogs Association does.

Tag us in your photos and videos on Social Media or email jackieq@guidedog.org.za to let us know how you are raising funds for us.

The person with the most creative idea as well as the highest fundraiser will receive exciting prizes. Money raised can be paid to the below account. Please use your name / donor number + “MD” as your reference.

Workplace fundraising

Whether you are back together in the office or still working from home and catching up via Zoom, chat to your colleagues about making S A Guide Dogs Association for the Blind your company’s charity of choice this Mandela Day. Come up with some fun and exciting ways to raise funds and receive a thank you email from one of our gorgeous puppies as well as a mention on our social media platforms. Some examples for you:

  • Host a dress up day / pyjama day / crazy hat day and ask your colleagues to donate. (Top Tip – ask your company to match the total donation and raise twice as much for Guide-Dogs).
  • Promote S A Guide-Dogs on your company’s social media platforms and appeal to your followers and clients to fundraise too.
  • Sponsor a Puppy through our Dog Sponsorship Program below.
  • Sponsor assistive devices through our O&M Sponsorship Program below.

Sponsor Assistive Devices to our Orientation and Mobility

Did you know that the Orientation and Mobility department at S A Guide-Dogs Association provides people with an alternative to a Guide Dog, namely the Long Cane.

Our Orientation and Mobility Practitioners provide long cane, visual skills and daily living skills training to children and adults with visual impairment.

You could dedicate your Mandela Day to our O&M department and aim to fundraise to provide assistive devices such as:

Long Canes @ R550.00 each – https://guidedog.org.za/product/long-cane/

Liquid Level Indicators @R350.00 each – https://guidedog.org.za/product/liquid-level-indicator/

Money Templates @ R35.00 each – https://guidedog.org.za/product/money-template/

An interesting way to fundraise for O&M is to attempt to perform some of your usual daily tasks blindfolded for 67 minutes.  Get your friends / family and colleagues involved in this exercise by joining you or sponsoring your efforts.

Dog Sponsorship Program

An amazing way to show that you care this Mandela Day is to sponsor a working dog.

South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind provides independence, mobility and companionship to people with disabilities and children with autism by providing Guide, Service and Autism Support Dogs.

Make a difference by purchasing a Titanium Sponsorship, Platinum Sponsorship, Gold Sponsorship, Silver Sponsorship, Bronze Sponsorship or Puppy sponsorship.

By choosing to sponsor a Working Dog, you help to fund the next generation of Working Dogs who go on to change the lives of those who receive them.

For more information on sponsorship pricing and benefits please visit the website.
