We all know the importance of exercise. Physical activity doesn’t only do the body good, it has also been proven to do wonders for our mental health and overall well-being.
April is Move More month, an initiative created by the American Heart Association aimed at promoting the importance of exercise for optimal heart health. This movement has been adopted by many countries in an attempt to curb rising obesity amongst populations.
Research shows that we are more likely to exercise if we have a goal in mind or if we are a part of a team or community.
In 2020, our Association faced an enormous challenge; to raise the much needed funds that enable us to provide mobility, independence and companionship, without the ability to host our many fundraising events that make this possible.
Our Marketing team came up with the idea to host our first ever virtual event, a walkathon challenge where participants had to walk 100 000 steps in eight days.
We felt that the event would provide participants with a sense of community and unity and would be beneficial to their mental health during a very isolating and difficult time.
Our supporters truly stepped up for Guide-Dogs, raising a total of R307 667.00 with 13 million steps taken! With the funds raised, we were able to cover the costs to train Noah, a Labrador Retriever puppy. Noah is this year’s event mascot and will be cheering on our participants, one step at a time!
We would like to invite you to Move More with us by participating in the 2021 Step up for Guide-Dogs challenge! Walk or jog 100 000 steps or cycle 100km between 21 and 28 April 2021 and help us to raise funds for our Association while improving your overall health. There will be awesome prizes up for grabs in a variety of categories and you will be changing the life of a person with visual or physical disability or a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
