A vacancy has arisen within South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind (GDA) for the position of Puppy Block Supervisor.

Capacity: Permanent
Location: 126 Wroxham Road, Paulshof
Responsible to: Head of department of Kennels, Weaning and Puppy Block

Key function: Responsible for the overall supervision in Puppy Block/Weaning Block of:
• Kennel Assistants who are working in these facilities
• Maintaining strict cleaning and hygiene controls in these facilities
• Ensuring Bio Hazard protocols are followed in these facilities
• Facilitate the Socialisation Program with puppies
• The care of broods / puppies in these facilities
• Whelping broods

Key responsibilities:
• Oversee hygiene in the Puppy Block/Weaning Block
• Oversee staff who are working in Puppy Block/Weaning Block
• Oversee volunteers who are working in Puppy Block/Weaning Block
• Oversee socialisation protocols
• Oversee the physical and emotional well being of all broods and puppies in Puppy and Weaning Block
• Undertake all record keeping and administration duties in Puppy Block/Weaning Block
• Recruit, train and supervise volunteers

Essential qualities:
• Good people skills
• Experience with puppies from birth
• Knowledge of brood bitches requirements from nesting to 8 weeks prior to whelping
• Experience in whelping an advantage
• Willingness to whelp broods, irrespective of the time
• Willingness to work on weekends, public holidays and after hours
• Ability to complete monthly reports
• Must be prepared to write exams and achieve a 70% pass mark
• Must have Microsoft knowledge

• Must be able to communicate and write well in English
• Must have a valid driver’s license
• Must have a minimum education level of a Matric Certificate (additional education an advantage)
• Early puppy socialising experience essential
• An understanding of dog behaviour and dog health essential
• Must have a comprehensive knowledge of broods, whelpings and early puppy socialising
