The School Programme is one of several initiatives run by SA Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind. Its purpose is two-fold, it aims to create awareness amongst the younger generation about the role of Assistance Dogs, disability, and the importance of making a difference. It also serves as a platform to raise much-needed funds that enable us to continue with our work.
Schools often contact us to arrange a visit from some of our dogs-in-training and their Instructors. These opportunities are meaningful because of the educational component but they also open the door for discussions about long-term collaboration between the school and the Association.
Teachers and learners are always thrilled to interact with our dogs, making it a memorable experience for everyone involved. In most instances, we call on our volunteer Puppy Raisers to accompany us, which also affords these young dogs-in-training with an opportunity for exposure to children within a unique environment, a critical part of their training and socialisation.
“I thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with the team from Fourways High School. They had a specific project in mind to help raise funds for the Association, and something that would not only involve the learners, but also create a platform where parents and families could show their support.”
Fourways and Bryanston High Schools invited our team and dogs to be part of the #rivalswithacause initiative and they even launched further projects throughout the year to show their love and commitment. We are extremely grateful for their support of our Association, and we look forward to many years of partnership with these outstanding schools.
