Since 1953

Help make freedom possible for South Africans with disabilities.
Change a life.

Since 1953, we’ve helped people with visual impairments, physical disabilities and children with autism live more independently.

We train Guide Dogs, Service Dogs and Autism Support Dogs, and provide Orientation & Mobility training, white canes and assistive devices — all at no cost to our clients.

Training an assistance dog takes 18–24 months and costs hundreds of thousands of rand. Your gift helps fund breeding, puppy raising, training and matching, creating life-changing partnerships.

what’s possible.

Your gift can fund a white cane and mobility training,
help train an assistance dog, or support the people and
resources behind a successful match.

Person using a white cane while walking independently

A white cane and training

Our Orientation & Mobility practitioners teach people with visual impairment to use a white cane, navigate safely and manage everyday tasks. That can mean travelling to work, shopping or moving around their community independently.

Guide Dog recipient with their Guide Dog

A Guide Dog partnership

An assistance dog takes 18–24 months from birth to graduation. Your donation helps fund breeding, puppy raising, formal training and matching.

Child with an Autism Support Dog

Service & Autism Support Dogs

Service Dogs can retrieve objects, open doors, switch lights and assist with everyday tasks. Autism Support Dogs can provide safety, companionship and physical pressure for children with autism.

Alani Ferreira with her Guide Dog Gatsby

A partnership that changes what is possible

Meet Alani and Gatsby.

Alani Ferreira is a South African Paralympic swimmer who has represented the country at three Paralympic Games. She has Stargardt macular dystrophy.

Gatsby was matched with Alani after the Tokyo Paralympics. He helps her navigate with greater confidence and independence. Alani calls him “the love of my life.”

Gatsby does the guiding. Alani gets to decide where she is going.

“He’s the love of my life.”

— Alani Ferreira, speaking about Gatsby

Your donation helps fund the work behind partnerships like theirs — from breeding and training to matching and ongoing support.
